Marine Serre Artist Research:

I am looking at the Paris based sustainable fashion brand Marine Serre’s work to look for inspiration for my final collection. Her process starts with researching in second hand stores, if the garment is interesting, she will recycle the material to fit in the collection. Marine Serre also works with new material such as biodegradable yarns and recycled fibers, around 50% of her collections are made from upcycled products.

Apart from the sustainability of the material, I also like the prints and design of her garments in the 2022 FW collection. She uses a mix of brown, khaki, green and white colours to create an earth tone as her main colour scheme. She also uses a variety of prints in her design, including fabrics with camouflage and map prints.

Marine Serre’s approach to fashion design gives me some ideas on the material and print that I can use in my final collection. Sustainable fabric can reduce its harmful effect on the environment. The fabric has to be made through organic and chemical-free farming, use of recycled material, and circular manufacturing processes.

I decided to use cork fabric in my final collection. Cork is sustainably collected from cork oak trees (Quercus suber) by cutting away the bark. The cork oak tree bark should be regularly cut to extend its life. The tree can support a lot of animals and plants, when the tree is regrowing the bark, it also consumes more carbon dioxide compared to regular trees. Finally, after it is collected, it only requires water to transform it into something suitable for fashion.

Cork fabric has this interesting tree print and texture that can link to my theme of adventure well. The cork fabric is also durable, water resistant and stain resistant, making it very suitable for any explorer to go on an adventure.

I also looked into organic hemp fabric as an option for the material that I use. The fabric is made from cannabis fiber mixed with organic cotton or bamboo fibers. Hemp creates one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics in the world. It is very durable, requires no pesticides, produces more oxygen for us breath and only needs 100 days to grow.

However, the major disadvantages of hemp fabric is that it is more expensive when compared with other fabric. Hemp fabric is also harder to dye compared to synthetic fabric, it will be hard for me to create vibrant colour out of the fabric.

I would like to use the material organic hemp fabric of my final design, because it is harmless for the environment. Also I really like the rough texture, it gives me a wild, natural beauty and adventure vibe. This material is not really the best material to dye colour so I will use it for the khaki area on the outfit. When I am using this material I will put an extra layer of smooth fabric below the organic hemp fabric, because some people may be allergic or not use to the texture of the fabric.

Finally I also chose coffee ground fabric to be used in my collection, its making process involves turning used coffee grounds into sustainable yarn that provides natural UV protection and can dry quickly. The fabric brand that I will be using is called sefia™, they produce natural fiber that is made from wood pulp combined with coffee ground yarns. It is excellent in the ability to absorb smell compared with other fabrics, you can easily keep the fabric clean by using sunlight or washing it. It is also very durable, can absorb moisture.

This fabric brand provides a huge variety of fabric choices and colours, they are sustainable fabrics that are almost wind proof by using foam coating techniques that enable them to block 96-98% of wind. This feature is suitable for my theme, as I am trying to design garments that are suitable for outdoor activity.
