Grayson Perry

Grayson Perry is an English artist who was born in 1960 at Chelmsford, Essex in the UK. In his early childhood his father had leave him when he is 4, because of his mother have broke the relationship with his father, and find a new horrible stepfather, so that Grayson Perry personal thought his mother is a drama queen, and because his father leave in his early age, so the he have a teddy bear that replace the character of his father also he name the teddy bear Alan measles, because Alan measles is his best friend when he was little also is his neighborhood.

Perry used pottery as his main art form in his early age, his vases are usually classical looking and decorated in bright colours, revealing subjects that are a little weird with their attractive looks. Perry also worked in tapestry from the 1990s, creating pieces like Mother of All Battles (1996), a woman’s folk costume stitched with images of weapons and killing.

The Annunciation of the Virgin Deal, 2012

‘The Annunciation of the Virgin Deal’ is one of my favorite art pieces from Grayson Perry. This tapestry is inspired by the artist’s visit to an area in England with the highest average household income. The kitchen table in the middle is filled with still life objects that show the owner of the house’s wealth with organic vegetables, coffee, fresh flowers and homemade jam. The Ipad shows the news that the owner recently sold his computer software business to a billionaire businessman for a large amount of money. The focal point of this tapestry is the owner’s business partner, standing in a yellow dress announcing the good news. This art piece makes reference to three different 15th century paintings of the biblical Annunciation. The Annunciation is the Christian celebration of biblical history of the announcement by the archangel Gabriel to Mary that she would conceive a son through virgin birth and become the mother of Jesus Christ. The vegetables come from Carlo Crivelli’s annunciation, the colleague’s expression from Matthias Grunewald and the jug of lilies from Robert Campin. Grayson’s use of colour, medium and his references to traditional art really amaze me and inspire me to explore more on different aspects and mediums of art.
