Recreating Not to be Reproduced and Artist research

I chose Rene Magritte’s Not to be Reproduced as an inspiration for my recreating artwork task. It is quite ironic for us to recreate this piece when the artist specifically asks us not to. Magritte’s work shows a man standing in front of a mirror, but the man can only see the back of his head. The art piece can really surprise the audience, making them take a double look as they realise that the painting is surreal and does not really make sense.

Not to be Reproduced is painted in 1937 using Oil on canvas. The painting uses a dull and monotone colour scheme, creating a weird and mysterious feeling for the audience and makes the piece more interesting to look at, which is quite common in many of Rene Magrittes’s work.

When I looking at the painting I think Rene Magritte want to bring out the message that sometimes we only judge people by their appearance or their mask but not trying to recognise or know that person deeply behind the mask and other meaning I think is normally people only can see advantage of them self and can’t see their shortcoming so that way when the man looking at the mirror, it didn’t reflect the front but only showing back.

We are trying to re-create the painting of Not to be Reproduced by using the white fabric to cover up the table to represent the windowsill and using the brown frame to re-create the mirror then the mobile phone we use to represent book to give a modern look also we are wearing black T-shirt to recreate the black blazer in a modern way and one of us standing in front of the frame and the other stand behind the frame to create a reflective look and same with the mobile phone reflection we put one in front and one behind with people holding it to create reflective but because we want to have a more interesting background so that we slide the window and put the frame in also to create a more interesting background and because the windowsill is to low so that we figure out by stacking books and covered by white fabric to make the windowsill look higher.

  1. It is interesting you have picked a surreal artwork to reproduce, and managed to cleverly capture the essence of Rene Magritte's work. I like the contemporary take on this artwork, being both a photograph and also having a mobile phone in the scene. I think you have composed this well in your collaboration.
