LaQuan Smith Artist Research

Laquan Smith was born in Queens, New York on August 30, 1988. In Laquan smith’s early age his grandmother was his role model, his parents had sent him to an art high school and it gave him a lot of experience. Smith had been rejected by FIT and Parsons, he had a hard time finding a path to the industry, later on Smith had started up his own company called LLC mainly focused on designing 3D leggings, it made him more famous and people call him the leggings guy. Laquan smith had a unique style of design, Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Kim Kardashion are some of his early supporter.

LaQuan Smith’s A/W 21 collection is particularly interesting to me and I decided to research more into it. “His inspiration for the collection started with the exploration of modern armor, old haute couture photographs from the 1950’s, as well as the movie Blade Runner.” (CFDA RUNWAY360, 2021)




Look 2,3,4,6

Look 2,3,4,6 mainly used glossy and shiny fabric on tight and fitted tops, pants, skirts and dresses, with an oversized jacket. The use of dark and metallic red colour schemes remind me of space exploration and Mars without using the traditional shiny silver that astronauts usually wear.



Look 12 and 13

Look 12 and 13 had a similar design, but instead of using dark red, it used a purple blue and bronze colour, which gives a completely different mood. Its use of bronze piping on the seams of the trousers gives a huge 60s space age vibe. 



Look 32, 33, 34

Finally, look 32, 33, 34 had some tight and fitted designs that really show the woman’s body shape. Smith in a vogue interview said that “I'm here to bring sexy back! Where are the women who want to get dressed up and look fabulous? That is the kind of people I need to market myself to.” (MAGUIRE, 2021)

The texture of these looks remind me of a meteorite and broken glass. The patterns had an interesting feature that reflected different silver shiny effects when viewed from different angles, giving it a futuristic space vibe.

Holographic straight-leg cargo pants

This bell-bottom pants from LaQuan Smith’s fall winter 2022 collection is made of iridescent faux leather, it has a shiny reflective glossy look and this pants is long with zippers on both sides. After looking at his designs from different collections, I realize that Smith often took inspirations from the 50s and 60s, using bell-bottom pants and tightly fitted garments as a silhouette and apply modern and futuristic, high shine, metallic colour schemes onto them, “he took new risks by interpreting silhouettes with unusual textiles” (LEBLANC, 2022) This creates a big contrast and develops an unique style for the designers.

I looked at LaQuan, as this work really related to some of the ideas I have had for my collection this term.  I would like to use reflective materials, I particularly liked the rainbow effect on the holographic trousers.  I also wanted to consider the use of PVC and the mix of sequins and lycra on the skirts in my own work.

On the style and cut of these designs I am interested in particularly the cropped style jacked with boxy shoulders and the tight fitting mini skirts/dresses that are bodycon in style and the same with tight fitting high waisted trousers.

Peter Pilotto: Fashion Sea Collection Research

I am looking at the Peter Pilotto 2012 spring collection for my fashion project. Peter Pilotto is a brand established in 2007 by Peter Piotto and Christopher  De Vos.  Their Spring 2012 undersea collection was inspired by their trip to Indonesia. Look 1: The outfit shows the theme of the underwater world by using sharp and slim waistline cutting. The fish scale-like pattern makes the model looks like a mermaid. The pencil skirt fits tightly to the body and looks like the tale of a mermaid. The cutting of the outfit looks like a fish and uses colours related to the underwater theme. The outfit looks eye-catching because the colour combination of the blue, purple and white colour gives the fish scales a textured look, which looks like they shimmer in the sun. The whole outfit looks sporty, the sleeveless top and the zipper in the middle of the top make it looks like a swimsuit.
