Peter Pilotto: Fashion Sea Collection Research

I am looking at the Peter Pilotto 2012 spring collection for my fashion project. Peter Pilotto is a brand established in 2007 by Peter Piotto and Christopher De Vos. Their Spring 2012 undersea collection was inspired by their trip to Indonesia.

Look 1:

The outfit shows the theme of the underwater world by using sharp and slim waistline cutting. The fish scale-like pattern makes the model looks like a mermaid. The pencil skirt fits tightly to the body and looks like the tale of a mermaid. The cutting of the outfit looks like a fish and uses colours related to the underwater theme. The outfit looks eye-catching because the colour combination of the blue, purple and white colour gives the fish scales a textured look, which looks like they shimmer in the sun. The whole outfit looks sporty, the sleeveless top and the zipper in the middle of the top make it looks like a swimsuit.

The design of the high heels have a dark blue colour scheme and with three crystal in the middle the reflective of the crystal looks like colourful coral

look 33:

This outfit uses a dark lime green colour scheme and has some white colour fish scale pattern making it looks like the colour of a tropical fish. The black line pattern looks like seaweed. The top part of the dress has a sporty vibe with a sleeveless design and a zipper. The bottom part of the dress is decorated with ruffles. Both the cutting and the blue and green mixture of colour make me think of tropical fish.  The ruffled skirt vividly shows the splash of fish swimming at high speed in the sea.

look 34:

The top features a zippered and sleeveless sporty style. The colour scheme uses a blue, aqua blue, purple and white colour scheme. The pattern on the top resembles the texture of ocean waves, which looks like sunlight reflecting off the water in different colours. The pencil skirt uses a shimmering golden yellow as the base colour, fish scales and starfish patterns, and some green patterns representing seaweed. On top of the pencil skirt, there's an extra layer of skirt that looks like a fishtail skirt. The top layer of the fishtail skirt has a very simple lime green colour scheme and the inner side uses dark blue sequins to create a fish scale effect. The whole skirt is shiny and golden, like a beautiful mermaid. The heels are designed with a green colour scheme and feature some floral patterns in green, white and black on top.

Lisa Armstrong, the Telegraph's Head of Fashion, describes the collection as 'a theme tackled elsewhere but nowhere more eye-catching or inventively than here - would certainly get you noticed. But unlike some of the kaleidoscope clashes we've seen, you wouldn't look freaky.' (Armstrong, 2011)

Maya Singer, a regular fashion critic states that the clothes were sharply cut and sexy and had a sporty mien that made everything feel very modern. (Singer, 2011)

Sarah Joynt, the fashion writer from theFashionSpot commented that 'head-to-toe print is a trend we’ve seen a lot of this season but the Pilotto team managed to keep the tropical prints from looking referential and bland.' (Joynt, 2011)

By looking at these designs, I thought that the undersea patterns on each deign worked really well and this is something I would like to incorporate in my own designs.  I also really like the contrast of the colours and the use of sequins.  I also like the way that the dress moves like the waves in the sea or fish in the sea.  I hope that I can create something that represent the sea and underwater life in my own collection.
